Blessing the Trees from Spring 2007

She bought the land

for the w i d e n e s s of it,

not the trees.

But it was trees

that defined the land,

chopped it up

into lines and spaces

the eye could order.

When all you’ve got is…

29 September 2006 @ 05:53 | Small Epiphanies | 4 Comments

Time seems to “hang out” here in rural Virginia. It’s not that people have it, take it, or always use it wisely. But, it’s there, just waiting. I heard a story today about a lady who decided to clean the gravestones in her local cemetery. She spends 5-6 hours a day [...]

Do You Remember Scrunchies?

Please stay with me.
I need you to hold my hand with this one.
Remember Poppy Andy Warhol’s prediction “In the future, everyone will be famous for 15 minutes.”?
Well the future is now folks, and here is what I am asking,
How do you know when your 15 minutes are up?

I Hope By Then I Will Be Ready . . .

I have never really wanted to serve a mission. As a child, I remember secretly feeling glad (though slightly wicked) I was a girl because it meant I did not “have” to go on a mission. Even in those tender years I could tell that childbirth would be no picnic, and the reprieve from missionary [...]

A chat with Darlene Young

21 September 2006 @ 12:00 | Author Interviews | 7 Comments

One of the great perks of working on the Segullah staff is meeting so many bright, faithful, and talented women. Darlene Young is a great example. A successful artist in several writing genres, her work has been published in Irreantum, Dialogue, Exponent II, and church magazines.. Darlene is secretary of the Association for Mormon [...]

Approaching Understanding

20 September 2006 @ 10:05 | CJane Speaks! | 26 Comments

Today, after much thoughtful consideration, I am going to come out of the closet. I am very seriously perplexed about homosexuality.
Not that I don’t see how a woman could love a woman, or a man love a man. Rather, why I shouldn’t be happy for them. I am caught between how I should feel, and [...]

It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad world

18 September 2006 @ 09:48 | Segullah Article Discussions | 16 Comments

Can we please talk about anger? No one wants to talk about it. No one wants to admit they ever get angry. I didn’t really even know I had any anger in me until I had children. Ben, my first child, was only a few weeks old. It was sometime after [...]

Kathy Soper - an interview

13 September 2006 @ 21:04 | Author Interviews | 15 Comments

So, I interviewed Kathy Soper the other day. For those not in the know, she is the editor of Segullah. She’s got seven kids (yep, she’s an angel), and she has managed to keep us all on task at Segullah (She’s an organized angel)! Here was our conversation.

Hey Kathy. Why don’t you introduce yourself.

Howdy, all. I’m Kathy, soon to be thirty-five years old. Happy to be LDS, happy to be married to Reed Soper, happy even to be living in Utah. But I do miss the trees–though not the humidity–of Maryland, my childhood homeland. And I admit I like Salt Lake valley better than her much-maligned sister. I had a rocky start with Provo culture when I arrived in ‘89, but I ended up marrying my home teacher, so it all ended well. I have a BA in English, and I’m interested in pursuing an MFA in creative non-fiction someday, when I’m no longer inundated with sippy cups and diapers. I have seven kids; the oldest just turned 13 and the youngest is almost a year old.

How does a woman with seven kids manage to be editor of a literary journal?

I ignore my kids a lot. Seriously. Of course, it’s all relative—I think I ignore them a normal, healthy amount. But in my early years of motherhood I was a total cruise director, so it’s taken me a while to be comfortable with any ignoring.

Do you want to know what I did yesterday?
It’s very sad, and you should know that before you read any further.
I went to try on my fat jeans and they didn’t fit. You speak fat jeans? They always forgive you. You wear them camping one night with hiking boots, and the next night to the [...]

Knocking

12 September 2006 @ 08:16 | Segullah Article Discussions | 21 Comments

“Do you pray regularly?” asked the director. Never having been asked this in any interview before, I said the first thing that came to mind.
“I’m praying right now, sir.”
