Editorial Spotlight

I WRITE TO HONOR FEISTY MARRIAGES. “Honor” might be a bit strong, but let us get it straight from the beginning: a zesty relationship is the highlight of my life. I understand that not everyone feels the same, . . .

Just What Mama Needs

Here’s the booklist review:

Just What Mama Needs

Glenn, Sharlee (Author); Hirao, Amiko (Illustrator)
Apr 2008. 32 p. Harcourt, hardcover, $16.00. (0152057595).

Abby loves to play dress up and to help her mama. On Monday, she’s a pirate in an eye patch and striped shirt who helps Mama “swab” the kitchen floor “decks.” On Tuesday, she’s a detective in sunglasses and overcoat who helps find missing clothes. On Thursday, she’s a witch in black dress and pointy hat who helps “mix up a delicious brew.” But on Sunday, Abby, in her favorite shirt, is just herself. “An Abby!” says Mama. “That’s what I need most of all.”

Charming and affirming, this picture book celebrates imaginative play and an affectionate mother-daughter relationship. Simple, descriptive prose incorporates brief dialogue and occasional lively sound effects. The warm collage art in vivid hues portrays Abby in diverse settings, both real and imagined, with playful perspectives and patterns. Kids will enjoy fun, engaging Abby and the story’s reassuring message.

And here are her book signing events:

Barnes and Noble at Jordan Landing on Saturday, April 26

King’s English Bookshop in Salt Lake City on Saturday, May 3 from 11:00 to 1:00.

Orem Barnes and Noble on Saturday, May 10

Provo Children’s Book Festival on May 17

Three cheers for Angela and Sharlee!
