Terryl Givens speaking at AML Conference. And it’s free!

Posted by | February 18, 2009 | 6 Comments

The Association for Mormon Letters’ Annual Meeting is taking place on Saturday, February 28th 9:00 a.m. at Utah Valley University. The keynote speaker is Terryl Givens, author of the acclaimed People of Paradox: A History of Mormon Culture.

Not only is this a great opportunity to listen to one of the most highly respected scholars in the field of Mormon studies, but there will be a day-long slate of speakers and discussions, not to mention an awards luncheon honoring last year’s outstanding contributions to Mormon letters. I’m sure the food will be terrific. I remember one year we got a churro for dessert, and I’m not kidding when I say I love myself a nice, warm churro.

And did I mention it’s free? (Except for the luncheon.) If you’d like to attend the luncheon, or learn more about the meeting in general, visit the AML’s website.

If you live near UVU, I promise, it’s an excellent way to spend a Saturday. I remember the first AML Conference I ever went to in–I think–2002? I didn’t know a single soul and it was a little nerve wracking, striding into the room all alone and listening to all those smart people talk. But I laid the foundation for some of my greatest friendships, and also made connections that continue to affect my professional life today. If you’re a Mormon writer (or would like to be a Mormon writer) the AML is an amazing resource.

Do come!

I wanted to! They changed the conference date on me and then it was too late to buy plane tickets. I’m supremely bummed. Do you know if they are planning on taping it or maybe making a transcript of Givens’ luncheon available?

Yes, I think it’s being taped. I’m sorry you can’t make it!

My son’s baptism is that day, and I’m booked. I loved the luncheon last year, though, and the keynote address was excellent. I so wish I could make it.

Last year was so fun. I totally want to go! Angela, are you going? Who else will be there? We could have a big party.
