For the Welfare of Your Soul from Fall 2006

“But . . . but . . . I . . . want to show you something,” Katie says quietly. I have embarrassed her. She shows me a miniature Book of Mormon. Perfect for an eight-year-old to love. I finger the pages and listen to her tell me how her inactive grandmother found it when they were starting to paint. Katie asked if she could have it, and her grandmother obliged. The first person she wanted to tell about her new book was me, and I had yelled at her before she could show me.

My 6 year old son, E, suffered a brain injury at birth. Due to this injury, he has cerebral palsy with epilepsy, blindness, serious developmental delays and a host of other medical problems. He’s very susceptible to respiratory infections. I wrote about him in “Living with Dying” for Segullah several months ago. [...]

‘Addiction’ from Anonymous

16 July 2008 @ 09:51 | Guest Post | 49 Comments

Alcohol, smoking, gambling, speed, adrenaline, food, prescription drugs, illegal drugs, video/computer games, online games, internet, pornography, sex, plastic surgery, risk, sugar, shopping, inhalants, stealing, power, money, . . . the list of things one could become addicted to seems endless. It reminds me of what King Benjamin told his people during his great discourse at [...]

The birthday present

8 July 2008 @ 07:19 | Guest Post, Small Epiphanies | 10 Comments

Today’s guest post is the continuation of last week’s Cover to Cover, by Lynne. Thanks again, Lynne!
As I mentioned before, the Lord knows us and where we are in our lives. No sooner had I finished reading The Book of Mormon, than an amazing experience happened to me that could not have happened earlier:
As adults, [...]

Change

2 July 2008 @ 13:00 | Guest Post | 12 Comments

This is a guest post from Sali-Kai, she guest posted with us about a year ago.  She is also an adopted member of the Segullah family (through Sharlee).  Welcome back!
Change, it is a’comin’”
Didn’t someone sing that once?
Maybe not, but that’s the refrain banging away inside my skull these days.
Change.
Morning. School time. “Bye, boys,” I [...]

24 June 2008 @ 07:46 | Guest Post | 27 Comments

Today’s guest post is the conclusion of “No one told me, from Bek of Ignore the Crazy. “I appreciate all the kind words and discussion via comments and e-mail after the last post. I think it is safe to say this is a topic that engenders strong feelings. Like many aspects of mothering, we [...]

waiting

10 June 2008 @ 00:15 | Guest Post | 13 Comments

Today’s guest poster has requested her name be withheld, in order to protect someone who is dear to her heart.
“Hurry, you’ll be late,” I called down to my son who was supposed to be joining the rest of the youth for the ward temple trip. “Mom, I need to talk to you,” he replied. As [...]

Part II of Finding Faith: Raising bicultural kids

3 June 2008 @ 07:26 | Guest Post | 33 Comments

This is the final (for now) installment in last week’s guest post, “Finding Faith.” We left off at the part when our guest poster had recently married a man of another faith and had resumed attending church.
During those early years, I had very sporadic visiting teachers, and I don’t think we ever saw home teachers [...]

Finding faith

27 May 2008 @ 08:48 | Guest Post | 22 Comments

The following is the first in a two-part guest post by a private blogger who wishes to remain anonymous. In it she discusses her life-long search for faith and the realities of living in and raising children in what she likes to call a “bi-cultural” family.

I was raised in the southwest, to parents who were [...]

Not Freegan buying it

21 May 2008 @ 06:14 | Guest Post | 13 Comments

Today we’re lucky to have another guest post from Lois (not her real name) of Lois Common Denominator. Thanks Lois!
I first started really thinking about the psychology behind consumerism after reading the book “Not Buying It: My Year Without Shopping” by Judith Levine. I love stuff like this. I still need to read the book [...]
