Well, I think that good mothers don't all come from the same mold. While my mom always watched us and made sure we were safe and would read to us, I don't remember her playing with us or doing crafts with us. I played with my siblings who are close in age as well as friends and neighbors. My mom did attend ceramics and other crafting classes from time to time. Over the Summer, we each got a turn at going with her and picking out a piece to complete. I love to entertain children but have a lot of anxiety about their safety(did not have the same level of anxiety when I was 19 to 23ish). If I could have one other adult to supervise and I could have my own separate area to engage and entertain, I would have all sorts of activities from crafts, literacy, drama, dance and more.

Lynn, thank you for your additional clarification. And Magpie, I know a lot of women who have experienced what you're going through. I have myself in my own way. It's a tough transition time. Thanks to everyone for your contributions to this conversation!

Jennifer Rueben--I think you should take that time. That's what they are there for. They should listen to you and be open to discuss issues--otherwise, they aren't doing their job right. If you are truly doing your best to keep your covenants, then they should be willing to discuss, to council (with you--not at you), and to act as a sounding board in your spiritual wanderings. If they wont listen to you flesh out your ideas, and yank a recommend hastily, there is always an option to go above heads, but I have found my priesthood leaders to always be open to discussing thoughts with mercy and openness. My husband does recommend interviews, and he is soooooooo concerned with doing it with the spirit and with mercy. I think that's the norm, rather than the exception.

other questions cause me much more concern than this particular one, as I understand what the question is really trying to ask. however, the one about being completely honest in all your dealings has always been of concern. I want to ask for definitions and examples before I answer. I am concerned however, that the interviewer will not take my interruption of his routine kindly nor be able to understand my concern without getting the impression that I have something serious to confess. I would really like to have a good half hour of personal time with my priesthood leader to explore discuss and ask questions.

So I am one od those Utah stereotypes who dropped out of school(with a year left :(!) and had babies when I was young. 3 by 24. My second half will begin in just a little while at 29! I have realized that, while I am grateful for the time I have had with my cute kids, I need to get out into the world again. I have been slowly doing night classes and will get my bachelors and than hopefully a masters so i will have greater opportunities for flexibility(see Lynn, look at how my education is still centered on my kids. I guess there might be lots of ways to prioritize family. )I made my choice based on my own needs , but also to show my kids some different options. My daughter is spunky and smart and I want to be a good role model for her.

and sometimes they do several of these things - I started full-time work the same week I stared teaching early morning seminary - after an extremely strong answer to prayers that yes Heavenly Father did want me to do at the same time. With three school aged children, and a husband that is the the High Council it can be a struggle but an amazing struggle.

What's the point of an interview if our answers are rote? We could be given a piece of paper and told to check the boxes. I've discussed my points of view in regards to this question and also discussed challenges I used to have with my relationship with my mother-in-law. The discussions always brought insightful counsel from the life of the Savior. And I was always given a recommend.
On a side note, I've always cringed at visiting teaching interviews that consist of the checkbox yes and no answers.
One of the most Christ-like friends I ever had only asked 2 questions when she interviewed visiting teachers when she was a relief society president:
1) will you please tell me about each sister you visit?
2) will you please tell me about you?
