Summer 2008: Palette of Light
Posted by Emily M. | October 9, 2008 | Comments Off
We were overwhelmed by the quality of entries to our 2007 Heather Campbell Personal Essay Contest. That is why we decided to dedicate our Summer issue entirely to contest entries. In addition to the ones selected as winners, we wanted to publish other essays that could easily have won the contest, had the field not been so tight. Each of these essay made me open my heart and mind a little more.
Our wise and wonderful webmaster, Johnna, has created a button for our Summer issue, to make it instantly accessible from your personal blog. Coding here:
<a href="http://segullah.org/current.html">I am reading <img src="http://segullah.org/images/currentcover.jpg" alt="the current issue of Segullah" /></a>
This coding will automatically update itself with the cover art of our most recent issue. Right now we are pleased to feature Sharon Furner’s joyful art, full of energetic brushstrokes and brilliant color.
Inside, in addition to the contest winners I highlighted yesterday, you’ll find these compelling pieces:
“Better Together:” Cheri Schulzke, our new prose editor, writes about letting each other into the messy corners of our lives.
“The Midnight Thoughts of a Military Wife” Caroline Tung Richmond tells us of her doubts and fears as she faces the inherent peril of her husband’s job.
“Hands” by Tessa Joy Greenwall, the moving tale of a teenager dealing with chronic pain.
“That Girl” by Laura Hilton Craner, a brilliantly honest, healing essay about depression, which I think should be required reading for every Relief Society.
“On Loss,” by Liz Busby, a tender, meditative piece, as the author learns of her grandfather’s death while she is abroad.
“Where We Are From,” by Trisha Coffman, a thought-provoking essay examining the interrelationship of place and family.
You can read it all here. Or, you can link to it from your personal blog, as I mentioned earlier. Better still, you can subscribe here, and turn the pages, and look at the beautiful art.
Thank you again to everyone who entered our contest! We are humbled by your gift for creativity, and by the compassion you show us in allowing us to enter into your lives.
To all our [female] readers, please start writing now for our 2008 Heather Campbell Personal Essay Contest, and our 2008 Poetry Contest! We would love to feature your writing in one of our issues next year.
