The New Year at Segullah

Three cheers for the sentimental sorts.  I am not among you.  I don’t notice dates, I don’t take note of names, and the only reason I remember my anniversary is that I might get a present out of it.  So this time of year, with its reflections and resolutions, is both tiresome and boring to me.  I try to force myself to think about the year passed but those thoughts last barely enough for me to categorize the year: good, bad, a little of both, mostly one or the other.  “Onward and upward,” I cry, determined to make 2009, or 2010, or whatever comes next, the most amazing personal year on record.

However, this refusal to dwell in what happened before doesn’t extend to gratitude.  I’m profoundly grateful to my family, friends, co-workers, heroes and of course Heavenly Father for making my life so rich in love and purpose.  Think of the friendships, the challenges, the emotional support and financial sustenance we have lent each other.  Who could forget the political discussions, mostly respectful although sometimes heated? The mourning of President Hinckley, the celebration of President Monson, and all the new lovely temples dotting the world gladdened our hearts.  I couldn’t be prouder of our community.

Oh shucks, look at me reflecting.

The support of you, my virtual Relief Society, categorizes last year as great, not just in my life but in the lives of all of us.  Happy New Year!

Now onward and upward, we have work to do.

“Virtual relief society” – I love it. Very apt. I’m thankful for you, my friend.

I don’t ‘do’ resolutions either babe. Although I have been tempted to make a few this year. But I think you just helped me to reconsider.

My friend bore her testimony last week and said if she makes a resolution, she doesn’t write it down, she tries to remember it a few days later and then if she can remember what it is, she’ll work on it a bit. Last year hers was to laugh more. She accomplished it. That’s the kind I can get into. Thanks Carina for your thoughts.
