The Mother in Me: Real World Reflections on Growing into Motherhood

Editorial Spotlight

We stand for a moment in the half-light, my companion and I still holding hands. Tears run down the mother’s face. I know, she says. There is nothing left, but will you pray? I say that I will. I offer some few, small words. I beg with all the faith I have, but the mother has begun to sob, and I understand that, even for the faithful, desperation will run comfortless at times—deep and wild.

UP CLOSE: Remarriage/Stepparenting– Call for Submissions

Ready or not the Christmas season is upon us. Holidays are all about families, and few things complicate family relationships like remarriage and step parenting.

I didn’t think remarriage had much to do with me– I hope to be married to my love until we both die at 95 holding hands. But both my brothers are divorced (one has remarried) and my dad is now a widower. I’ve been amazed at the change in family dynamics through my brothers remarriage: which parent provides the discipline? how do you include new cousins in the family circle? how do these kids manage three sets of grandparents? what if they don’t want to be part of your family? what if my dad remarries someone horrible?

We’re looking for blog posts of 400-600 words on any subject related to non-traditional families. You may choose to be published anonymously on the blog but please include your real name and email address with your submission. You may click on Guest Submissions on the sidebar or use the link HERE.

Our hope, my hope, is that this subject fosters understanding and charity for all families.
