Peculiar Treasures: Women and Words

By Kellie Purcill

The Olympics has certainly highlighted many female athletes, though sexism also made headlines instead of the victorious champions. If you want to learn about more incredible women, the site “Women You Should Know” has a wide range of profiles throughout history and arenas (also shared on the major social platforms). Not making huge news, but changing lives, is the creator of Little Pantries – how simple yet brilliant is that? While thinking of women we should know, those we visit teach are definite contenders. With these sisters in mind, see if you are a courteous Visiting Teacher.

What do museum tours and Reading Rainbow have in common? LeVar Burton’s passion for education and engaging kids in learning. He’s voiced a museum’s audio tour, which has proven to be a huge success. But don’t take my word for it… And if you want the shortest summaries of classic books, look no further than this comic catalogue (I can’t pick a favourite, but Dante’s Inferno and Moby Dick are most likely), with a further collection on his website here.

About Kellie Purcill

lives way on the other side of the planet in her native Australia and gives thanks for the internet regularly. She loves books, her boys, panna cotta, collecting words, being a redhead and not putting things in order of importance when listing items. She credits writing as a major contributing factor to surviving her life with sanity mostly intact, though her (in)sanity level is subject to change without warning.
