SEGULLAH POETRY PODCAST “WORDS FALL IN…”

By Melonie Cannon

I am so excited to bring you a Segullah Poetry Podcast called “Words Fall In.” Why a podcast? Well, Segullah is about giving women a voice, so why not hear them too? Please be patient with the mixes on my first attempt at creating a podcast. If we get a positive response, perhaps we can record more episodes and then move them to ITUNES. For now, LISTEN and BE IN WONDER!

Melissa Young was our first poet guest and she has beautiful words of wisdom and jaw-dropping images in her poetry. I thank her and I thank you for taking fifteen minutes out of your day to find some beauty in words.

About Melonie Cannon

Melonie Cannon has surrounded herself with beautiful words for as long as she can remember. This led her to find a home with Segullah after writing an essay published in the May 2006 Segullah issue. She was invited to join the staff and has been a part of Segullah in various capacities since, including being the creator of the “Words Fall In” podcast and is the current Poetry Editor.  She received her M.Ed from the University of Utah and was a certified Secondary English teacher before becoming a Mom of four. Over the years, her focus has been on natural healing modalities and becoming a sacred sound healing practitioner with a focus on the drum, rhythm, voice, and vibration. She has her Ph.D. in metaphysics and a Doctorate of Divinity in order to help women to connect to the divine within themselves.

  1. Hey Melonie! Thanks for doing this podcast. It was fun for me to hear your voice and Melissa's voice again. I'm a person who often doesn't feel very connected to poetry. Maybe it's too much work to have to fill in the blanks myself? Maybe I'm just not very eloquent so it is hard for me to grasp? I don't know. But hearing poetrt read out loud, and also getting some background and/or commentary helps my simple mind understand it and appreciate it more. Thanks! ?

  2. It was so nice to hear Melissa voice. She and I go back a long way. Many years ago she lived in our community and she joined my writing class. I say writing class because it is still continued well over eight years now. At first we started to critique each other's writings but now it seems to be a gathering of women sharing and a therapy group filled with love. My third nonfiction book would have never been published without Melissa's editing. I always have said that my freelance writing days with magazines, newspapers, the Ensign, and then book writing was to inform others. But when I really want to learn who I am I write poetry. When my husband died I started to write poetry more often to balm my grief. I started to reread Alice Morrey Baily's collection of her poems titled "Rain Shadow's." Any poems must be read out loud so you can hear it in your ears, and especially Alice's poetry. She leaves me breathless. I knew Alice many years ago. She was a very famous poet and so very loving and giving to me. Anyway Melissa's poetry also leaves me breathless. And even though I have written three nonfiction books and many articles, I always retreat to writing poetry when I want to feel my deep longing of self.
