She

By Erin Kahn

what if She was always
deathless woman who wombed the earth
stringing the stars like tinsel beads
small-minded men wrote her out
the patriarchs, apostles, kings
scissored her out of the story
if men do not want me
they shall not have me
purple mother who polished the sand
unfolding trees with a wet whisper
so She kept silent
shut her box of wonders
withdrew from her appled earth
Mother, your children are ready
to gather dropped pearls and polish them
scribe your name back into the book
made ragged by scissor-blasphemers
beauty-in-being who carved the mountains
rain-making matriarch
squeeze the stars til they crumble
stir the sea til it screams
melt the mountains with your monumental breath
cry in every ear:
SHE IS

  1. So tender and powerful. What an apt description of this Being, one who can “unfold trees with a wet whisper” and also “melt the mountains” with that same force. How better to depict the Primal Femanine force, the Great Matriarch. This is sublime poetry.
