They Cannot Make Me Small

By Whitney Owens Hemsath

If you fear they have
locked me away,
repressed my image,
restricted my power,
reduced me to a whisper,
then take courage, my child.

They cannot make me small.

I am in the clouds beyond mortal horizons.
I am in the breeze waltzing where it will.
I am in the perfume of every changing season,
and above all else
I am.

I, with my love, created yesterdays and tomorrows.
In each of them, I am the same.

I birth islands from the churning fires beneath you and cradle
every sparrow on the constant winds above.
I command the cells within you to multiply or heal.
I call and twelve legions of angels respond.

With my all-seeing eye, I permit things as they are.
The choice to bear all things is my own.
And though dark is the glass through which reason stares,
in time, nothing shall be withheld.

So be still, my child, and know:

I am power and dominion.
I am glory, light, and love.
I am a future worth striving for.

I am a destiny they cannot make small.
