How Are You?

By Susan Jeffers

I was going to curl up in a ball
And just cry my face all the way off
Walk around as a weeping skull for a while
But I had groceries in the car
So I took care of those instead

I was going to take a lava hot bath
Slide down beneath the surface
Breath held, lungs burning
Reducing myself to ash and magma and clouds of raining acid
But the laundry has been in the washing machine for three days
And I should really do something about that

I was going to push all the dresses in my closet to one side
And lean my forehead against the corner of the newly naked wall
And hide us both behind the clothes, door shut, light out
If I close my eyes, it’s like I don’t even exist
But I agreed to check on the neighbor’s cat
Fifi eats a whole lot
Plus the whole litterbox issue

I want to unhinge my jaw and just scream at the sky
Become an infinite throat
Emptying infinite howls
Into an infinite void
Raw and bloody and black
But you dropped by with a houseplant or
A plate of cookies or a card
Obviously I’m not just going to leave you standing there

Fine, thanks for asking.
A little better than I was, yeah.
