To the Wasatch Mountains

By Anya Horman

For the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but my kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed, saith the Lord that hath mercy on thee.
–Isaiah 54:10

God could uproot you: sky island mountains,
But peace and mercy He will not discard.
This certainty flows from your rock fountain.
I scale you and enter, on knees stone-scarred
To touch sun’s pinnacle. You are remnant
Sediment gestating in nature’s temple,
Prophetic as Virgo’s stars are pregnant,
Revelations ripen in your vessel.
Secret whisperer, worshipper of dawn,
Sing above winter inversion to hearts scarred
By deceit, fatigue, defeat: virtue swan
Diving off a summit, like Oaks discard
Stiff-necked leaves, then birth tribes of tender shoots
Climbing mercy; a peace I feel in my roots.
